Why Post-Holiday Fitness Resolutions Fail

By the end of January many of the holiday resolutions to exercise and become more fit will be broken.

Most people know that exercise is good for them. What gets in the way is emotions not determination.

Women may be more self-conscious than men about going to a gym. Women may feel more intimidated by the equipment, feel pressure to exercise in trendy clothes, and feel uncomfortable about exercising in front of the opposite sex.

I got some advice many years ago from a friend when I first started going to a coed gym. She told me that the men in the gym were far more interested in their bodies than they were in mine – and she was right.

And some other thoughts:

  • Avoid an all-or-nothing approach. Instead of committing to daily classes at the local gym, you might start by making smaller, incremental changes, such as taking the stairs or parking at the far-end of the parking lot.
  • If you really can’t find the time to exercise for an hour, break your exercise into more manageable (10-15 minute) chunks.
  • Small changes to diet can also add up to big weight loss.
  • And if you miss a day of exercise or break your diet, pick up where you left off. It’s not the end of the world.
  • If a big gym makes you uncomfortable, look for a specialty gym that caters to just woman or to your age group.
  • Or skip the gym and find an activity you really love – dancing, swimming, bicycling, walking….

National Institutes for Health (NIH) has several guides to help you choose a good mix of exercise activities which include strength-building, endurance, and balance.

A Wellness Microbreak

Many of us spend long hours at our desks – at the computer. I find that remembering to take regular breaks to stretch and change position  makes me feel a lot better at the end of the day.

The American Association of Occupational Health Nurses has created a series of exercises you can do at your desk in just 1-2 minutes.  The pamphlet includes exercises for eyes, neck, back, shoulders, hands and wrists. You can also do some of the exercises while stopped in traffic on a long commute.

TIP: Rather than emailing or phoning someone in a nearby cubicle, get up and walk to their desk. It’s good exercise for you and a good way to build stronger relationships with co-workers.

P.S. While you are taking that MicroBreak, drink a glass of water to help you remain well-hydrated. (Tea, coffe, and cola drinks don’t count. They are diuretics and pull water out of the system.)

Climbing Mt. Monadnock – the Benefits of Sun Salutations

On Labor Day, I was up near Peterborough, NH, climbing Mt. Monadnock.

Mt. Monadnock is the 2nd most-climbed mountain in the world. Many people mistakenly believe that it’s just a little mountain. Believe me it is a real mountain! almost 3200′ (about 1800′ up from the trailhead). The hike was close to 4 miles round trip.

My husband and I  climbed it about 14-15 years ago and I remember it being hard work then – and it still is. But in some ways I found it easier because my balance is good (thanks to yoga) and I could make use of my upper body strength as well as my leg strength on the descent.

Since June, when I took Peggy Cappy’s teacher training course, I have been doing Sun Salutations on every day. Sun Salutations increase cardiovascular fitness. Downward Dog, Plank,  and Upward Dog build upper body strength.
